• Member of Dundee Local Access Forum from April 2010  
• Member of Steering Group for STRIDE (Sustainable Travel in Dundee East) since December 2009.
• Teaching Associate (part-time) at University of Dundee, Town & Regional Planning.  Started in Masters programme on Sustainable Urban Development - covering SD Indicators, Governance, Evaluation, 2010. Repeated 2011 & 2012, plus undergraduate lecturing in Sustainable Development and the Environment, and Environmental Assessment.  
• Board member of SNIFFER (Scotland and Northern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research) since October 2008.   
• Board member of the Claverhouse Group, a Dundee-based charitable company delivering Government training programmes for young people and the long-term unemployed, since September 2009
• Board member, Friends of the Earth Scotland, since May 2011
• Convenor, Friends of the Earth Tayside, since November 2010
• Member of Scottish Executive Steering Group on Best Value and Sustainable Development for Public Bodies from December 2005-June 2006, resulting in the guidance Toolkit (see publications). Subsequently seconded to work with the Scottish Executive Best Value Team for 6 months, September 2006-March 2007, as a part-time consultant in Sustainable Development and Knowledge Management, to build capacity in this area among public bodies.

• Scottish Enterprise representative on the Synchroni UK Knowledge Management Forum from 2002-2006, attending seminars in the UK and Europe to share experience and different approaches to knowledge management
  
• Member of the East of Scotland European Partnership Sustainable Development Policy Group from 1997-2007 (latterly renamed the Key Policies Group), involved in developing a new approach to mainstreaming sustainable development in the allocation of European Structural Funds, and sharing experience with other European regions through an EU Commission Pilot Project.  Reappointed to the Key Policies Group in 2009.
  
• Member of the Institution for Economic Development since 1996, and of the Scottish Branch Executive since 2004
  
• Chair of the Sustainability Working Group for Dundee City Council Community Plan, 2000-2001
  
• Member of the Steering Group for Tayside Economic Research Centre at the University of Abertay, from 1996-2002
  
• Founder and Honorary Secretary of START, a charitable trust to assist disadvantaged young athletes in Scotland, from 1994-2006
  
• Chairman of the Scottish Association of Tourist Officers 1990-91, responsible for devising the first comprehensive approach to training tourism staff in Scotland
  
• 1983-91, successively, member of the Visitor Services Group, the Overseas Marketing Group, and the UK Marketing Group, for the Scottish Area Tourism Network, helping to develop national policy in each of these areas
  
• Secretary of the Conference "Europe of Regions", held in Copenhagen and organised by the Danish Institute, from 1979-85, responsible for liaison with political and academic delegates from different regions and writing the conference report.
