Types of knowledge and uses of knowledge by organisations

Knowledge is at the heart of any business, whether it involves critical production processes, customer requirements, new technology or what your competitors are doing. These are very different, but we can categorise them to make them easier to understand and manage.

Every organisation uses different types of knowledge, in a variety of ways:

Types of knowledge range from the know-how involved in handling business processes, to the analytical skills involved in assessing sales trends and customer behaviour.

Externally, knowledge becomes part of the services provided to customers, at the same time as it is gathered internally to manage the business and decide its future direction.

Understanding these different types and applications of knowledge is the starting point for managing them more effectively, to achieve improved business performance.

The IDEAction approach involves explaining "knowledge" in the context of the individual business or organisation. A clear picture is built up showing how knowledge is at the heart of business processes and relationships. Business performance can be seen to rest upon the effective creation, gathering and utilisation of knowledge by skilled teams and individuals.

Consequently, improved performance can be achieved by working more effectively with the different types of knowledge, applied to deliver business objectives.
